There are 17,133 no. of weavers in the district, mainly engaged in making of traditional Sambalpuri design of tie and dye saree and dress materials. Late Sri Krutartha Acharya and Sri Kunja Bihari Meher of this district have been awarded with “PADMASHREE” for their outstanding contribution in Sambalpuri Tie & Dye methods. ACTIVITIES
OF HANDLOOM
INDUSTRY IN THE
DISTRICT OF
BARGARH. Handloom Sector is an important Cottage Industry of the State. It has sizable employment potential being next to that of agriculture. Handloom cloth of Orissa, particularly woven by the weavers of Bargarh district have been appreciated all over the Country and abroad because of its appealing form, workmanship, design and colour combination. The tie and dye design otherwise known as IKAT fabric, otherwise popularly known as "Bandha" technique in handloom weaving of Western Orissa has been the most appealing form of hand weaving process with an intricate art of long tradition of excellence and craftmanship, mainly woven in the district is a specific design which is only possible in manual labour. The performances of the district in regard to mobilisation of looms, production and sale of cloths so far achieved are given as under :-

Out of 52 nos. of working Weavers Cooperative Societies of Bargarh district the Sambalpuri Bastralaya Handloom Coop.Society Ltd. having its head-quarters at Bargarh, within the jurisdiction of un-divided Sambalpur district then after it extended to K.B.K. district and coastal belt of Orissa, was organised by Dr.Padmashree Krutartha Acharya during the year 1954. There are about 6000 nos. of its regular weavers under 'A' Class membership and about 9000 nos. of associated weaver members under 'C' Class membership, working through its 49 nos. of Weaving Branches and 53 nos. of Weavers Coop. Societies from Western Orissa and 33 nos. of W.C.S. from coastal belt. In this way about 15,000 weavers are being provided with gainful employment who are below of the poverty line category. Due to certain un-avoidable reasons and others the society has sustained loss to the tune of Rs. 18.50 crores. The loss is mainly due to higher amount of interest burden of its sustaining loan availed earlier.
Inspite of all constraints the State Govt. have been pleased to
extend the Govt. Guarantee to the tune of Rs.20.00 crores to avail
financial assistance from the National Coop.Development Corporation,
New-Delhi and N.B.C.F.D.C., New Delhi which was decided and finalised by
the State Cabinate held on 14.07.2001 subject to One Time Settlement (O.T.S)
of its sustaining loan from NABARD availed through Sambalpur
Dist.Coop.Central Bank Ltd.,Bargarh stands as on 31.3.1997. It is yet to
be materialised.
